Trump’s Davos Speech Filled With Republican Ideology Ahead Of Upcoming State Of Union Address

President Trump gives his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland

President Trump will give his first 2018 State of the Union address on Tuesday which follows his recent trip to Davos, Switzerland late last week where he gave a speech that was filled with Republican ideology at the World Economic Forum alongside world leaders in politics and finance.

During his Davos speech on Friday, President Trump said that America is the “place to do business” which comes at a time when international tourism to the U.S. has fallen sharply under his presidency and his travel bans and anti-immigrant sentiment about “shithole countries” haven’t helped to project a positive image about American values on the international stage.

The Global Business Travel Association reported that the U.S. is expected to lose over 1 billion in travel related expenditures in 2017.

In his Davos speech, President Trump spoke about investing in America and boasted about the strength of the American economy and the stock market which has jumped to all-time record highs during 1st year of his presidency, adding over 7 trillion in new wealth, boosted by large scale tax cuts impacting individuals and corporations with the corporate tax rate fall to 21 percent from 35 percent.

President Trump said the world is witnessing the resurgence of a “strong and prosperous” America and claimed “there has never been a better time to hire, to build, to invest and to grow in the United States.”

Although the newly approved tax cuts benefit the upper class in America more so than the middle class with the highest income tax bracket dropping from 39.6 percent to 37 percent, President Trump overlooked that fact and said “we’ve massively cut taxes for the middle class and small business to let working families keep more of their hard-earned money.”

Regulation = “Stealth Taxation”

After distorting the definition of regulation, President Trump characterized the term as “stealth taxation” which comes as his administration has already weakened several environment regulations and protections related to the environment and health safety, and took the United States out of the historic 2015 Paris Climate Accord after installing a climate change denier to run the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“Regulation is stealth taxation” President Trump said and then later claimed that unelected bureaucrats have imposed “crushing” anti-business and anti-worker regulations on our citizens with no vote and said that his administration has cut 22 regulations for every one new rule.

“We are eliminating burdensome regulations at a record pace” President Trump said.

Describing regulation as a burdensome trap, he said that “we are freeing our businesses and workers so they can thrive and flourish as never before” and later emphasized they are “lifting” restrictions on energy production.

“We are lifting self-imposed restrictions on energy production to provide affordable power to our citizens and businesses and to promote energy security for our friends all around the world” President Trump said.

“America First” Doesn’t Mean America Alone

President Trump made it clear that his frequently coined phrase “America First” doesn’t mean America alone and maintained that when America grows, so does the world.

Claiming that American prosperity has created jobs all over the world, President Trump said that they are also working to reform the international trading system so that is supports broadly shared prosperity and rewards those who play by the rules.

Although President Trump has decided to move the U.S. away from the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and threatened to take the U.S. out of NAFTA, a multilateral free trade agreement between Canada and Mexico, he said that the United States is prepared to negotiate mutually beneficial, bilateral trade agreements with all countries, including the countries in TPP.

President Trump said that they would consider negotiating with the rest, “either individually or perhaps as a group if it is in the interest of all.”

International Foreign Policy And Immigration

President Trump said that his administration has led historic efforts at the United Nations Security Council to unite all civilized nations in their campaign of maximum pressure to de-nuke the Korean peninsula and explained that they continue to call on U.S. partners to confront Iran’s support for terrorists and block Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon.

He failed to mention that the 2015 Iran nuclear accord reached between Iran, the U.S., and five world powers plus the European Union has already blocked Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon and Tehran has cooperated with international inspections.

President Trump said they are working with allies and partners to destroy jihad into terrorist organizations such as ISIS and is leading a very broad coalition to deny terrorists control of their territory and populations, to cut off their funding and to discredit their wicked ideology.

“I am pleased to report that the coalition to defeat ISIS has retaken almost 100 percent of the territory once held by these killers in Iraq and Syria. There is still more fighting and work to be done and to consolidate our gains” President Trump said.

President Trump said that America’s immigration system is stuck in the past and advocated for ending family chain migration and imposing a merit based model.

“We must replace our current system of extended family chain migration with a merit-based system of admissions that selects new arrivals based on their ability to contribute to our economy, to support themselves financially and to strengthen our country” President Trump said.
