Two Trump Campaign Officials Indicted In Federal Probe, Another Plead Guilty

The case of the U.S. versus Paul Manafort and Richard Gates III was unsealed yesterday after the 2 defendants were permitted to surrender themselves to the FBI.

Paul Manafort joined President Trump’s campaign in March 2016 and served as his campaign manager from June to August 2016 before working as a political consultant and lobbyist.

Robert Gates III, a business associate of Manafort, is alleged to have been aligned with Manafort’s previous dealings with the Government of Ukraine and the Party of  Regions, a political party led by Victor Yanukovych when he was President of Ukraine from 2010 to 2014.

Both Manafort and Gates III are facing a federal indictment containing 12 counts: conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.

Manafort and Gates pled “not guilty” to the 12 charges.

According to the federal indictment, between 2006 and 2015 both Manafort and Gates generated tens of millions of dollars as a result of their Ukrainian work and hid Ukrainian payments from U.S. authorities from approximately 2006-2016 while laundering money through U.S. and foreign accounts.

The indictment states that because Manafort and Gates directed a campaign to lobby U.S. officials on behalf of the Government of Ukraine and political parties in Ukraine, they were required to report to U.S. authorities their past work and fees. Manafort and Gates did not do so.

George Papadopoulos

George Papadopoulos is a former Trump campaign staffer who worked on foreign policy and has already pled guilty to giving false statements to federal agents.

President Trump had previously called Papadopoulos and “excellent guy” and a “low level volunteer” but in a recent tweet this morning, he changed his tone and tweeted, he was “already proven to be a liar.”

President Trump tweeted on Tuesday, “The Fake News is working overtime. As Paul Manaforts lawyer said, there was ‘no collusion’ and events mentioned took place long before he came to the campaign. Few people knew the young, low level volunteer named George, who has already proven to be a liar. Check the DEMS!

During a White House press briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that Papadopoulos’ role was “extremely limited” during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and described him as a volunteer.

Concerning Papadopoulos’ previous role in the campaign, Sanders said “no activity was ever done in an official capacity on behalf of the campaign in that regard.”

According to legal documents, Papadopoulos described in detail his past efforts in 2016 to arrange contacts with people he knew were Russian agents, including one person who told him he had Russian dirt on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, including “thousands of e-mails.”

E-mail activity from George Papadopoulos has come under close scrutiny as the federal case probes for possible collusion with Russia.

A forwarded email message from a campaign employee documented Papadopoulos’ earlier proposal of a meeting between Trump and the Russian government.

A Washington source has told Reuters that the e-mail sender was Manafort and the recipient was Gates.
