AP: Austrian right-wing presidential candidate Norbert Hofer has conceded defeat

Alexander Van der Bellen

The Associated Press reported on Sunday that Austrian right-wing presidential candidate Norbert Hofer conceded defeat against left-leaning and pro-EU candidate Alexander Van der Bellen during Austria’s election re-run.

Preliminary results show that Alexander Van der Bellen has already achieved 53.3 percent of the vote compared to Hofer’s 46.7 percent.

Election officials in Austria have said that the margin of victory is large enough for Hofer to concede defeat, guaranteeing a Van der Bellen presidential win.

Later on Sunday, the results of Italy’s closely watched constitutional referendum will be announced.
