Google is seeking to establish itself as hardware and software maker in the high end smartphone business after unveiling a new lineup of Google smartphones yesterday called the Pixel and Pixel XL during a Google event in San Francisco that also showcased a variety of other new devices.
Manufactured by HTC, Google’s Pixel smartphone devices comes loaded with Google Assistant, using artificial-intelligence technology that allows Pixel users to avoid the keypad and have a direct conversation with Google to find answers and accomplish tasks on the move such as playing a video on You Tube or asking for navigation to a shopping mall after receiving a text message from a friend or business client to meet there.
You can simply tell Google, “Navigate there” and Google’s map will appear with full directions.
The Pixel display is 5 inches and 5.5 inch with the larger Pixel XL.
Pixel devices come with a vivid AMOLED screen that has true blacks and 16.77 million colors.
Both devices use 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4 coating on the front display and back glass while the body is encased with an aerospace grade aluminum body and easy-to-grip curved edges.
Unique to the Pixel smartphone is a Pixel Imprint, a fingerprint sensor, which is located on the back of the phone and is fast for unlocking.
Both Pixel devices have a 12.3MP main camera and 8MP front camera.
Google calls the Pixel camera the best smartphone camera they’ve ever made and it’s the highest rated smartphone camera with a DxOMark Mobile score of 89.
The Pixel camera allows for photos in low light, bright light or any light.
Action shots can be captured with Smartburst, which takes a rapid-fire sequence of shots and automatically selects the best one.
Another camera feature is Lens Blur where you can point to select an area you want to focus in your photos and blur the background.
Google is giving Pixel users free unlimited storage for original quality photos and videos at full resolution in Google Photos.
Pixel runs on a super fast Snapdragon 821 processor with 32 or 128Gb of storage and 4GB memory.
There are three colors available: Very Black, Quite Silver and Really Blue, a limited edition for the U.S. only.
The Pixel battery life is long and lasts all day. It also charges fast, up to seven hours from only 15 minutes of charging.
Pixel comes with the latest Android operating system, Android 7.1 Nougat. When a new software update is available, it can download and install in the background.
Google Duo and Allo are pre-installed with Pixel so you can video call and text with all your friends, regardless if they use Android or iOS.
The Pixel smartphone have easy adaptability since you can connect your old iPhone or Android device to your new Pixel with the Quick Switch Adapter which allows you to sign into your Google account on your Pixel and transfer videos, photos, calendars, and music.
If you pre-order Pixel, Google will include the new Daydream View VR headset and controller that opens up the world of virtual reality and allows Pixel users to play games.
Pixel is available for pre-order starting yesterday at $649 and is available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K., and Germany.
On October 13th pre-orders begin in India.
Google teamed up with Verizon to make Pixel available at Verizon locations and retailer Best Buy.
Google offers Pixel unlocked at the Google Store.
