On Friday Donald Trump finally acknowledged that President Barack Obama was born in the United States and abandoned his 5 year old conspiracy theory that Obama wasn’t truly an American at birth.
“President Barack Obama was born in the United States. Period,” said Trump on Friday. “Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again,” he added during a speech in Washington.
Trump blamed his opponent Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for starting the birther movement, a claim that has been debunked by fact-finding websites.
“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008 started the birther controversy. I finished it” Trump said.
Retired General Colin Powell admitted that the birther movement was racist and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton supported that view on Friday.
“For five years he has led the birther movement to delegitimize our first black president” Clinton said yesterday in Washington.
“His campaign was founded on this outrageous lie” Clinton added.
First Lady Michelle Obama called out Trump for trafficking in prejudice, fear, and lies, although she didn’t mention him by name and instead referred to him as a “candidate.”
“If a candidate is erratic and threatening, if a candidate traffics in prejudice, fears and lies on the trail; if a candidate has no clear plans to implement their goals, if they disrespect their fellow citizens, including folks who made extraordinary sacrifices for our country; let me tell you, that is who they are. That is the kind of president they will be, trust me” Michelle Obama said.
Michelle also repeated an earlier phrase that she’s used in the past.
“When they go low, we go high” she said.
