President Barack Obama gave a speech yesterday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at a Clinton rally where he portrayed billionaire Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as out of touch with the American worker, offering division and fear instead of real policies.
With Hillary out sick due to pneumonia, Obama took center stage and was quick to defend improvements to the economy since he became president and characterized Trump as a bitter person whose own policies won’t work in a democratic society.
“This is a dark, pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other, we turn away from the rest of the world. They’re not offering serious solutions. They’re just fanning resentment and blame, and anger and hate” Obama said.
Obama portrayed Trump as an elitist who spent most of his life trying to stay as far away from working people as he possibly could.
“And now this guy is going to be the champion of working people? Huh? I mean, he wasn’t going to let you on his golf course” Obama said.
“He wasn’t going to let you buy in his condo. And now suddenly this guy is going to be your champion?” Obama questioned.
President Obama’s job approval numbers have improved in recent weeks and moved above 50, according to recent polls.
Most political analysts believe that improving job approval poll numbers will serve to help Hillary Clinton during the upcoming election in early November.
Obama said that we can’t take the presidential election for granted and serious issues are at stake.
Although Clinton’s reluctance to disclose her illness with pneumonia has raised some transparency concerns, Obama made a strong pivot with the transparency issue and criticized Trump for failing to disclose his own tax records and using money from his foundation for expensive paintings.
“You’ve got one candidate in this race who has released decades’ worth of her tax returns. The other candidate is the first in decades who refuses to release any at all. You want to debate foundations and charities? One candidate’s family foundation has saved countless lives around the world. The other candidate’s foundation took money other people gave to his charity, and then bought a six-foot-tall painting of himself” Obama said.
According to polls, a strong majority of Americans want Trump to disclose his tax records as other presidential candidates have done in the past, especially with lingering questions about his tax bracket, charitable contributions, and true net worth.
