Apple unveiled their latest iPhone on Wednesday in San Francisco amid rising hopes that new upgrades will entice more buyers and reverse two consecutive quarters of declining iPhone sales and slower demand in China.
Apple’s iPhones are important to the tech company and account for over 60 percent of the company’s total revenue.
Over the past 3 years, Apple iPhone users in the U.S. have shown reluctance to upgrade their devices after major cell phone carriers stopped subsidizing new iPhone models every two years and now offer more costly monthly payment plans.
“In the year ending with the June 2013 quarter, 66% of old iPhones were either under one year old or from 1-2 years old. By the March 2016 quarter, 51% of old iPhones were either under one year old or from 1-2 years old” according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners in a release on June 7, 2016.
The cost of Apple’s latest iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have never been higher and are set at $649.00 and $769.00 at a time when Apple’s newest iPhones have never been better with improved features.
Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are dust, splash, and water resistant, come with new camera systems, a new jet black color, stronger battery life, 3D Touch, and no headphone jack.
Apple replaced the headphone jack with a new stereo speaker system, lightning port connector, lightning equipped ear pods, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter that allows customers to use old headphones and accessories.
Apple has also released wireless headphones called Airpods that are purchased separately for $159.00, have 5 hours of battery life, and are easy to pair with Apple devices.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have a new home button with force touch technology that utilizes a pressure sensitive multi-touch technology and comes in two new colors: black and a sleek jet black.
Apple’s iPhone 7 has a 4.7 inch display with LED-backlit widescreen, Retina HD display, and a 12 MP camera with digital zoom up to 5 x.
The iPhone 7 Plus has a 5.5 inch display with LED-backlit widescreen, Retina HD display, and a dual lens 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras that together offer optical zoom at two times and up to 10 times digital zoom for photos.
The iPhone 7 comes with a powerful A10 Fusion chip which run up to two times faster than iPhone 6, and two high-efficiency cores that are capable of running at just one-fifth the power of the high-performance cores, according to Apple.
The graphic performance is also enhanced and runs up to 3 x faster than the iPhone 6 at as little as half the power, providing a better level of gaming.
“The completely redesigned cameras shoot incredible photos and videos day or night, the A10 Fusion chip is the most powerful chip on any smartphone while delivering the best battery life ever in an iPhone, and an entirely new stereo speaker system provides twice the sound, all within the first water and dust resistant iPhone” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
Apple added more storage capacity by eliminating the 16 GB found in older iPhones and now starts at the more spacious 32 GB with the iPhone 7.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in silver, gold, and rose gold.
The new black finish is available in the 32GB, 128GB and 256GB models beginning at $649 while the shiny jet black color is exclusive to the larger 128GB and 256GB models.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in over 25 countries beginning on September 16.
Pre-orders begin on September 9th at 12:01 PDT.
During Apple’s Keynote event yesterday, Apple also unveiled a new version of its smartwatch called Apple Watch Series 2 that is water resistant, has imbedded GPS, and some new fitness features.
