Republican presidential candidate Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said that Donald Trump is declaring war on the Muslim faith with his controversial proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the U.S. and explained he has a better solution to partner with Muslims to help defeat Islamic State.
“What he is doing is declaring war on the Muslim faith. What I am trying to do is partner with Muslims” Graham said on Thursday during an interview on MSNBC Live with Jose Diaz-Balart.
Senator Graham offered a more pragmatic approach that includes reaching out and working closely with Arabs to defeat ISIL, another acronym used for ISIS.
“I would go to capitals of the Arab world and enlist their support to destroy ISIL. They want to destroy ISIL as much as we do, it is destroying their societies, corrupting their faith, and ISIL would chop their heads off” Graham said.
“So when you say no Muslim can come to the United States, you are helping ISIL. What I want to do is partner with the people in the faith which is 99 percent of them to destroy a radical strain of Islam that threatens us all” Graham added.
According to Senator Graham, Trump is doing “exactly the wrong thing” and said that he has no idea what he is doing.
Senator Graham believes that Trump is appearing to be strong but is playing on prejudice and xenophobia while empowering the enemy.
Senator Graham explained that we should do the “very opposite” of what Trump suggests and advocates for controlling entry of the country, looking closely at the U.S. visa program, have good vetting, but not declare war on the faith itself.
“Because the hope of winning this war lies within the faith” Graham said.
