Apple Watch Unveiled At Media Event; Partnership With HBO Announced

aqApple  introduced their new lineup of smart watches yesterday at a tech event called “Spring Forward” in San Francisco as the tech company seeks to establish itself in the wearable market while making stylish technology more accessible for its consumers.

Apple also announced at the event a new partnership with HBO, the world’s most successful pay TV service.

A new standalone service called HBO NOW will exclusively debut next month on Apple TV, making a streaming only subscription directly available to Apple customers for the first time at a rate of $14.99 per month without a cable or satellite subscription.

HBO reported that at launch they will offer a free 30 day introductory period to new HBO NOW customers who sign up with Apple.

HBO CEO and Chairman Richard Plepler announced at the event that this is the “next phase of innovation” for HBO which is owned by Time Warner Inc.

“With this new partnership, a natural evolution for the network, we have access to millions of Apple customers who are used to getting their favorite apps immediately. Now, they can do the same with an HBO subscription” said CEO Plepler.

Apple plans to lower the price of their 3rd generation Apple TV from $99 to $69, making it even more affordable for consumers to become integrated with Apple.

Apple announced yesterday that the Apple Watch is its “most personal device yet” and will be available for sale on Friday April 24th in nine countries including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the UK and the US.

Apple will start taking pre-orders on April 10th.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the Apple Watch begins a new chapter in the way Apple relates to technology and predicted that Apple customers will love it.

“We can’t wait for people to start wearing Apple Watch to easily access information that matters, to interact with the world, and to live a better day by being more aware of their daily activity than ever before” Cook said.

Apple Watch introduces a new technology called the Digital Crown that is a new way to scroll, zoom and navigate without obstructing the display.

Some of the other new technologies on Apple Watch includes Retina display with Force Touch that senses the difference between a tap and a press.

A new built in feature called Taptic Engine quietly delivers a gentle tap on your wrist as you receive a notification or message.

Apple Watch is available in three distinct collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Watch Edition.

The starting price of “the Watch” is $349.00 and moves up to $399.00, not including the price of the bands, and is available in 20 models.

The “Watch Sport” costs between $549 to $1,099 and is available in 10 different models.

The high end “Watch Edition” starts at $10,000 and is available in 8 different models.

The Watch Edition is made of 18-karat yellow or rose gold and has a display protected by polished, precision-machined sapphire crystal.

Case sizes are 38 mm and 42 mm for all Apple Watch collections.

Apple Watch gets 18 hours of  “all day” battery life.

It takes 1.5 hours to charge the Watch to 80 percent and 2.5 hours for a full charge.

Apple Watch needs to be tethered to a nearby iPhone for it to be fully functional.

Apple Watch is compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5 c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus.

Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, an Apple analyst, told Bloomberg yesterday that the Apple Watch adds about 4 percent to Apple’s numbers for this year and next year, a little more for earnings, which should bring a small uptick in profitability.

Munster said that after the first year and a half, the Apple Watch could breakout and become a new category for Apple.

Apple announced that the  13 inch MacBook Pro will be upgraded with Retina display that contains a new Force Touch trackpad.

MacBook Pro comes with a fifth generation Intel Core processors, Intel Iris Graphics 6100, faster flash, and longer battery life.

Apple also  updated the 11-inch and 13 inch MacBook Air with fifth generation Intel Core processors that contains Intel HD Graphics 6000, Thunderbolt 2, and faster flash to the 13 inch model.
