donetskSince the end of February 2014, demonstrations by pro-Russian and anti-government groups have occurred in major cities across the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine that culminated in seizures of key government buildings across the region and numerous reports surfacing about Russian support for the armed separatists movement that has already claimed 2,000 lives, according to the United Nations.

Although Moscow denies providing support to separatists in eastern Ukraine over the past several months, Ukraine’s security and defense council said on Thursday that Novoazovsk and areas of Ukraine’s southeastern region were under the control of Russian forces as Ukrainian forces retreated.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko confirmed on Thursday that Russian forces had entered Ukraine as the military conflict widens across stretches of southeastern Ukraine.

A pro-Russian separatists leader named Alexander Zakharchenko in eastern Ukraine told Russian TV that 3-4,000 Russian citizens were fighting in their ranks which comes as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is holding a meeting to discuss the new developments in Ukraine and Moscow faces the prospect of wider sanctions for its role in eastern Ukraine.
