Google Unveils Android Wear

androidGoogle held their annual developers’ conference on Wednesday in San Francisco and unveiled Android Wear, a wearable device platform that moves with you on the go and connects your phone to your wrist, making information more accessible.

Android Wear only works with phones running Android 4.3 or higher and will soon be carried by three technology companies using the Android platform: Samsung, LG, and Motorola.

Samsung and LG announced at the conference the release of new wearable devices called the Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch.

Both new devices can be ordered from Google’s Play store as early as next Tuesday afternoon.

The Samsung Gear Live costs $199 and comes in black or wine red.

The LG G Watch costs $299.99 and comes in white gold, black titan.

The third new Android Wear device, the Moto 360, will arrive later this year.

Android Wear users can receive appointment notifications, weather  updates, and other important reminders (E.G. plane arrival information, commute time).

By using your own voice, you can also respond to text messages from your watch or even play and skip music tracks.

Just say “Okay Google” followed by “How do I get to the train station?” and the navigational answers will instantly arrive on your wrist.

Say “Ok Google” to ask other questions such as “How many calories there are in an avocado?” and the answer will appear.

lgSamsung already released an earlier wearable device months ago called the Samsung Gear 2 that operates on a different operating system, the Tizen operating system.

Pebble Steel  is another company that has already released a wearable device with its own operating system.

The wearable device market is about to get a lot more crowded.

Apple is expected to finally release their widely anticipated wearable device sometime later in the year, although the company has been quiet about their plans.

Microsoft and Intel are developing wearable devices as well.

Google announced during the conference that they are still working on a new technology called “Google Fit” that consolidates data from fitness apps on mobile and wearable devices, serving as a health tracking platform to help users keep track of health data.

Apple is currently working on a similar type of health app for its users.

During Apple’s recent developer’s conference in early June, some new information was released about a new Health app called HealthKit  that will soon be arriving on iOS 8.

Samsung has already launched a new health app called the S Health app.
